Two-Way Radio Bench Technician

Job Description

Air Comm is a well-established two-way radio and wireless communications service provider in the Phoenix, AZ area. Due to increasing customer demand, we are in need of multiple RF Bench Technicians to program, repair, and align two-way radios down to component level (primarily Motorola radios). This position would lend itself to a detail-oriented technician who enjoys the thrill of troubleshooting. The RF world is highly niched and Motorola Solutions owns a significant portion of the market. We are a Platinum dealer for Motorola.

The ideal candidate should have current MOTOROLA MOTOTRBO LMR radio repair/troubleshooting experience or willingness to LEARN it quickly.

 

Responsibilities

Job Requirements (NOTE: Not all techs need all skills, this is a representative sampling of existing skillsets across several techs with diverse backgrounds):

  • Troubleshoot Land Mobile Radio (LMR) subscribers, such as Motorola MOTOTRBO radios, down to component level at a repair bench.
  • Repair LMR subscribers, such as Motorola MOTOTRBO radios, using soldering irons, solder suckers, solder wick, and hot air reflow stations.
  • Test handheld radio batteries for proper voltage and capacity using battery analyzers.
  • Program subscriber code plugs for mobile and portable subscriber equipment for different DMR channel types (Conventional, Capacity Plus Multi-Site/LCP, Capacity Plus, Connect Plus, and Capacity Max).
  • Program MOTOTRBO Digital features, such as Digital Emergency, Phone Patch, Call Alert, Text, GPS, and Data.
  • Use a service monitor/spectrum analyzer/VNA and other test equipment for RF-related troubleshooting and tuning.
  • Solder and desolder components using magnifiers or other vision enhancement mechanisms.
  • Tune duplexers, combiners, and filters using return loss (RL), Insertion Loss (IL), and Vector Network Analyzers (VNA).
  • Use Aeroflex automated test jigs to automatically test specific radios.
  • Perform software and firmware updates on specific radios.
  • Complete paperwork as appropriate for the successful repair of radios.
  • Build and test audio interface cables.
  • Build and test RF jumpers. (RG58, LMR400, LMR600, 1/2in Heliax, and 7/8in Heliax).
  • Communicate clearly with other technicians and management.
  • Train and be trained by other technicians.
Requirements

Preferred
  • Experience using a service monitor or communications test set to generate and receive test signals to LMR subscribers.
  • Experience soldering and desoldering components, specifically surface mount technology (SMT) components.
  • Experience with troubleshooting or repairing Motorola MOTOTRBO infrastructure, Digital Conventional, IP Site Connect (IPSC), and Capacity Plus Multi-Site/Linked Capacity Plus (CPMS/LCP), Capacity Max, trunking, or a similar field.
  • Experience with Motorola Solutions CPS, CPS 2.0 and/or Radio Management/RM.
  • Experience in tuning duplexers, combining equipment and related test equipment (Spectrum Analyzers, Service Monitors, RF Tuning).
  • Experience repairing Motorola and other brand two-way radios.
  • Experience in battery backup systems, power amplifiers, phone patches, and cross-band radio interoperability.
  • Working knowledge of IP networking, subnets, VLANS, gateways, and IP addressing.
  • Possessing the following certifications or licenses: FCC General Radiotelephone Operator License/GROL, Amateur/Ham Radio License, BICSI, CET, CCNA, etc.
  • Experience with basic DC electricity and use of a Multimeter/DMM.
  • Experience with using RF power meters to measure forward and reverse RF power on antenna and coax systems.
