Priority Scan

What it does:

  • Allows users to monitor multiple channels but prioritize specific ones for receiving calls.
  • Continuously scans through a pre-defined list of channels, dwelling on priority channels for a longer duration compared to regular channels.
  • When activity is detected on a priority channel (e.g., incoming call), the radio stops scanning and switches to that channel, allowing the user to hear the incoming communication.

Benefits:

  • Ensures users don't miss important calls on designated priority channels while still monitoring other channels for general updates.
  • Improves response times in critical situations by prioritizing communication on designated channels.
  • Enhances overall efficiency by allowing users to stay informed on various channels without constantly switching back and forth.

Configurability:

  • Users can define a scan list that includes both regular and priority channels.
  • The dwell time on priority channels can be customized to balance monitoring other channels and ensuring prompt response to priority calls.
  • Some radios offer options for different priority levels (e.g., Priority 1 and Priority 2) with varying dwell times.

Here's an example of how Priority Scan can be used:

Scenario: A security guard working at a large mall needs to:

  • Continuously monitor several channels for communication with other guards patrolling different zones.
  • Prioritize a channel dedicated to the control room for receiving important announcements or emergency alerts.

Implementation:

The security guard's radio is programmed with a scan list:

  • Priority 1: Control Room channel
  • Channel 1: South Zone communication
  • Channel 2: North Zone communication
  • Channel 3: Central Plaza communication

How it works:

  • The radio constantly scans through all channels.
  • It dwells longer on the Priority 1 channel (Control Room) compared to the other channels.
  • If an important announcement or emergency alert comes through the Control Room channel, the radio stops scanning and switches to that channel, ensuring the guard hears the critical information immediately.
  • The guard can still hear activity on other channels when the Control Room channel isn't active.
